Lean Transportation is a transportation service that the transport operator offer through their intention design, arrange, and operate that can supply to their shippers and consigners with more selective and higher quality service when they must cut down the transportation cost under the condition that the shippers and consigners reduce the goods transportation input.

According to this definition, Lean Transportation has these characters as bellowed:

A. Transportation focus on shipper and consigner.

Lead by shipper and consigner, know about what they are real needs. Know about what they produce, when to start production, where their clients are, how do their materials and supply chains construct. Transport operator shall establish long-term, stable and comprehensive co-operation relationship with their shippers and consigners, so that can build up a so-called “Joint Union” structure. With this structure model, Transport operator will get involve into shipper and consigners' business, and shippers and consigners can share transportation management information of carriers.

Lean transportation is supported by information techniques, without modern information techniques, no lean transportation. The precondition of lean transportation operation is based on well-understanding of all circumstances, shippers; consigners and transport operators' “Jiont Union” are closely connected by information networks of each other while the boundary concepts are becoming more and more slur.

It can be divided into two parts: lengthwise diversification and transverse diversification.
